What will it take to close this X-Ing?
It is extremely busy without adequate safety controls. One dead so far - how many more will it take????
What will it take: On January 26, 2005, at 6:03 a.m. PST, southbound Metrolink commuter train #100 collided with a sport utility vehicle that had been abandoned on the tracks immediately south of the Chevy Chase Drive at-grade crossing and near a Costco retail store on the Glendale-Los Angeles boundary, in an industrial area, north of downtown Los Angeles. Eleven passengers were killed. This crossing has the same design as the Doran crossing but without the crossing traffic or the Propane Tanks.
Notice the SUV below on the left!
The rear of the SUV is over the tracks and the traffic light is red. In the second picture, the red car is almost on the tracks. Good thing it is smaller than the SUV.
I talked with a worker nearby!
He was telling me that it wasn’t a problem since the electrical box he was working on had the smarts to turn the traffic signal green if a train was coming. Yes, and look at the cars in the upper left photo - Would they not start to cross and follow the one on the tracks? Give me a break, this is NOT A SAFE CROSSING!
BTW - He also told me about a big rig that got caught on the tracks, that he observed, and the big rig had to eventually bust through one of the crossing gates! Sounds safe to me!
Over 60 trains from 5am to 6pm!
Primarily Amtrac and Metro Link trains with a few freight trains thrown in during the day.
Illegal Turns Common!
Notice the signage - No Left Turns and there goes the white pick-up as most other vehicles. Also notice - only 2 gates and broken down fences preventing intrusion on the right-of-way!
